I used to use Windows Vista and had problems installing new software via my cd/dvd drive. In essence, the drive would not recognize that the disk had executable files on it. I asked for help via this forum for Windows Vista and was finally instructed to perform a repair install of my Windows Vista software. Well, I tried to perform a repair install of windows vista but the original disk that came with my computer would not let me select the upgrade version. To make a long story short, I have upgraded to Windows 7 which went fairly smooth.
The problem, however, still exists. Let me try to explain it a different way.
I am trying to install Turbo Tax. When I load the dvd, it does not start automatically but rather asks if I want to view the files.
When I select that option, I cannot see the setup files or any other files which look like they would perform any task. For reference, when I do this exact same thing in my wife's computer, the install program automatically starts up. When I close down the install program and look at the files on the drive, I see what I expect to see on a cd/dvd software install disk. (setup file, autorun file, etc) Based on information obtained from Turbo Tax, I tried to install the program in both the safe mode and in the selective startup mode. In the safe mode, the program began to install but eventually crashed and said that 'Windows Installer could not be accessed'. When I view the files on the drive in safe mode, they are all what they should be. For some reason when I am in regular mode, my dvd drive is not recognizing the files.
The drive did the same thing as normal in the selective startup mode. I finally got the program to install as follows: opened windows in safe mode, accessed and copied all files on the dvd to my desktop and then installed from the desktop folder. Why does my cd/dvd not recognize these files????
Hi MPFeenan, Do you face the same issue on all the CD/DVDs? That is great to know that you have resolved the issue with your own skills. You are always advisable to run hardware troubleshooter in this scenario. Here is the link for instructions: It is a possibility that the DVD burning software on your computer was causing the issue. Another possibility could be that certain CD/DVDs are burnt in a different environment which may also confilct with the software that they choose to burn and browse the CD/DVDs. I hope this answers your question.

I have a slightly different but possibly related problem.when I insert a blank writable CD in the CD/DVD drive to copy files, I would be told that the CD contained data, then the baloon saying you have files waiting to be burned appeared. When i opened the 'waiting to be burned' to see what I saw the dexktop.ini file. However, I could delete it, then start over with another blank, and copy files by using the Windows Explorer drag. I think this behavior started when I enabled all the Roxio services after a period of troubleshooting which ended with Ram replacement.

I have disabled them again.will see what happens. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit, and Roxio Creator 2009.
